Lost Albums

From Blueberry Boat

Page for album ideas that haven't (as of yet) been realised

  • KCRW jam session 23rd Oct 2006

Matt (Jokingly): "The next album will star a dog we haven't got yet, or perhaps a pre-verbal cousin."

(More seriously): "It'll be Van Morrison, Robert Plant, not starring them, but a 70's English Rich Guy sound." (referring to Widow City)

New ideas for the Fiery Furnaces are already forming; Matthew's current interest is to make an album inspired by Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

And given the Fiery Furnaces record for experimentation, it would be foolish to dismiss that as merely a joke.

Interviewer: I heard you have a live album being planned.

Eleanor: We wanted to do that.

Matt: Maybe now. After this trip. We should be able to edit it up. I don’t know how that would be released though. It won’t be a regular record [sold] in the stores.

Interviewer: Any plans beyond that?

Matt: Yeah, we’re going to record in January. So it’ll come out in the summer [2007].

  • According to a video interview on FaceCulture, the Furnaces will record a live album prior to their next studio effort.

BD: I heard the next record is going to have an Afrobeat influence?

MF: No. The next tour’s gonna sound like that, but not the record.

BD: Do you know what the next record is going to sound like?

MF: It’s going to be a rock record. 70’s rock sounds. Stuff that’s really going to flatter Eleanor’s voice. Not that it’s in need of flattery.

he plans to return to the studio for another Fiery Furnaces album this fall. "It won't be another broken keyboard record -- we're going to do a noisy, Afrobeat album with no horns this time," he promises.

  • The siblings have also tossed around the idea of making a concept album in which Eleanor performs in the character of a ship. Another male vocalist (not Matt, gross) plays a pirate who commandeers this Eleanor-as-ship vessel. The songs would, of course, be love songs from the captain to his ship and from the ship to its captain. Matt can’t deny the novelty here, and, frankly, he doesn’t care to.

“I hope it’s a novelty,” he says with confidence. “I hope it’s something different.”
