Reviews

It was quite a while ago, but I thought the London concert was great! A new, much heavier sound for the tour, definitely dropping the first third of Matthew's oft-quoted 'sissy psychedelic Satanism' Bitter Tea review. They played each song as a seperate entity, unlike some of their previous gigs.

I thought the stand-out songs were in general not necessarily my favourite album tracks - personally my highlight was, halfway through, Evergreen. Very upbeat, and with heavy guitars at the same time.

The 'Chris Michaels' set opener was a winning way to start, followed by a straight forward but amazing 'Crystal Clear'.

'Candymaker's Knife In My Handbag', 'I'm In No Mood': both had new arrangements and would have been almost unrecognisable were it not for the lyrics, and they were a real treat.

Unfortunately, two songs that I consider very strong: 'My Dog Was Lost But Now He's Found', and 'Police Sweater Blood Vow' (Buzz Buzz on the set lists), didn't do anything for me. Music in 'My Dog' I think is very intimately tied to lyrics - this one felt like it was out of time with the words which seemed to forge ahead, while the music lingered. 'Police Sweater' had very weak verses, but the chorus picked up slightly.

Waiting To Know You, Single Again, Up in the North - all good fun. Loads and loads of songs - 20 in full. The Friedbergers and company really have stamina.

Eleanor was hypnotic to watch, and Matthew looked extremely intense. A funny moment at the end, before the last song, Matthew heard the guy shouting "Two Fat Feet" throughout the concert (there's always one), and announced that the next song would indeed be... "Two Fat Feet". Eleanor and the others then promptly started "Blueberry Boat". I wasn't complaining. Then after the song, (it was the last of the night), Matthew gave a knowing look and, as I interpreted it, made the finger past the neck motion, jokingly suggesting that Eleanor would get it for not paying attention.

I personally would have preferred another RMC song or two, but only a minor complaint. Yes, so overall - incredible. Makes up for that time I didn't have a clue who they were, when I saw them opening for Franz Ferdinand. I think this concert would have been more accessible for beginners, but I would think it'd be alway better to introduce them to someone, before taking them to the show (which I in fact did!).
